Sunil Narine misses West Indies World Cup squad: Kiran Pollard

West Indies captain Kieran Pollard has said that the spinner, who played a key role in the Kolkata Knight Riders’ qualifier-2, will resist the temptation to include Sunil Narine in their T20 World Cup squad.

Narine, 33, took four wickets in the eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday and reminded fans of his vintage past with impressive batting.

He has taken 11 wickets in eight IPL matches since the league reopened in the UAE. He was wicket-less in the match against Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad and earlier RCB, but took three wickets in the team’s two-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings.

However, he has not played any international cricket since August 2019 and had to be ignored when the defending champions announced their World Cup squad due to West Indies fitness.

The ICC deadline to make changes to the squad ends on Friday.

“If I add my words about my two cents or not including him, then how is he bowling on these Sharjah wickets — in all directions,” Pollard told ESPNCricinfo.

“Let’s deal with the fifteen guys who are here at the moment, which is very important, and see if we can rally around these people and defend our title.

“I have no comments on it. Enough has been said about it. I think people have explained the reason for not including him at this time. Personally, I know Sunil Narine as a friend before he was an international cricketer.

We both grew up playing cricket together. He is a world class cricketer. ”

Pollard is keen to have fast bowling all-rounder Andre Russell on his team. The Burley cricketer, who is not part of the WI squad, has not played in any IPL game since September 26 due to injury.

Nothing can be said about him until Russell arrives at the West Indies camp.

“Before I can make any predictions about what he can do or what he can not do, we must first assess ourselves as a team,” Pollard said.

“We did not get a chance to see him. We received reports of what he did. I do not want to try to say what he can or cannot do at this point.

“He’s the key man to our team and we want him to be 100%, but we have to face what lies ahead of us.”
