Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is of the opinion that captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni should elevate himself to fourth position after qualifying for the Chennai Super Kings IPL knockout stage.
CSK are currently second in the table with 14 points from nine matches.
After the resumption of the IPL in the UAE, Dhoni came in to bat sixth in two matches, scoring 3 and 11 against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively.
Gambhir, who has twice given the title to the Kolkata Knight Riders, said Dhoni needs to play in the fourth position whether the team chases or defends the whole.
“After qualifying for the CSK playoffs, MS Dhoni should be batting at No. 4, whether you are chasing or batting first, you can spend time in the middle,” Gambhir told Star Sports.
“I want to see it, hopefully it will happen. The captain’s best thing is that it’s his own desire, he can bat anywhere.
Dhoni has scored just 51 runs so far this season.
“Your No.3 and No.4 do not always run. You have to bat a little more. The more runs you make, the easier it gets,” Gambhir said.
“You qualify for the playoffs but the responsibility should not fall on you. You lose the opening wickets and you have to come and run.”
CSK will face KKR on Sunday.
