I could not sleep for 8-9 days while playing: Ashwin on why I had to leave the IPL in the middle

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday said that almost everyone in his family had to leave the IPL midway due to Kovid-19 infection and that he had sleepless nights worrying about their safety while playing in the T20 tournament.

Eventually, the IPL was halted after multiple cases were reported in its bio-bubble.

“Almost everyone from my place was affected by the Kovid. In fact, some of my cousins were also admitted and were seriously ill and they somehow recovered,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“I can not sleep for almost 8-9 days. Since I can not sleep, it really stresses me out. I play matches without sleep. And since I found it really taxing, I had to leave the IPL and go home in the middle.

“Actually, when I left, at that time, I had an idea whether I could play cricket after that. But still, I did what I needed to do at that time.”

The Premier India spinner said he was planning to return to the IPL as his family members started getting better, but the tournament was eventually stopped.

“I thought there would be no cricket for a while. The IPL was also postponed. In the meantime, when people in my house started recovering, I wanted to get back into the IPL, then the IPL was canceled,” he said.

Ashwin is currently in custody for 14 days with the Indian team ahead of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand and a five-Test tour of the UK with England.
