Delhi Capitals need to start again, first half never mind: Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting believes that their performance at the top of the table in the first half of the IPL should start from scratch when the lucrative league resumes in the UAE on Sunday.

The IPL was suspended in May for the 14th season of the league due to several COVID-19 cases in its bio-bubble.

“It doesn’t matter what we did in the first half of the season. It’s been four months since we played good cricket, so we really have to start all over again,” Ponting said in a press release issued by the franchise.

“We need to build ourselves up as we go in the tournament and make sure we are playing our best cricket in the back of the tournament.

“Our performance in the first half of the tournament was how well we played and how hard we worked, but I don’t think we played our best cricket,” the Australian batsman said proudly.

The IPL will resume in the UAE on Sunday. DC leads the points table with six wins from eight matches.

Ponting said the players showed great intensity during the pre-season camp here.

“I have been looking forward to coming back to Delhi Capitals Camp for four months. I had a great time working with the team and it was a great time in my calendar year. I am closely watching what is happening here. I am talking to the coaching staff here and they have done a great job so far (pre-season). In camp) .You can see with the intensity and attitude shown by the players that this is a really valuable camp so far.

“I’m really excited about what we’re doing in the next four-five weeks,” the 46-year-old said.

When asked about the return of Shreyas Iyer to the Delhi Capitals side post after recovering from a shoulder injury, Ponting said, “It is a great thing that Shreyas is back. He has an infectious attitude.

“I talk to him a lot and his training is great. He’s very eager to get back on the field, to run and win. He’s a world class player and he’s going to add a lot to our team, no doubt about it.”

Delhi Capitals will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first match on September 22.
