The Danish royal couple removed Prince Christian from a boarding school attended by Denmark’s elite after former students came forward with allegations of abuse and harassment, tarnishing their reputation.
Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Australian-born Princess Mary have withdrawn their son from a prestigious Danish boarding school following allegations of sexual abuse and harassment.
The royal couple confirmed their son Prince Christian, 16, had been withdrawn from Herlufsholm boarding school and said his sister Princess Isabella, 15, would no longer attend as planned.
“As we have said before, we are deeply shocked by the reports that have recently emerged about Herlufsholm,” they said in a joint statement. statement.
“We have also made it clear that as parents of a child at the school, we expect the school to do what it needs to do to rectify unacceptable conditions.
“The question about our son Christian and daughter Isabella’s choice of school has been very important to us, and the unfortunate matter has brought many strong opinions into play in the public.
“That is completely understandable when it comes to the welfare of children and young people. At the same time, it has been important to maintain our basic idea that important decisions must be made on an informed basis. Now we have that base.”
Herlufsholm boarding school was the focus of a TV2 documentary, Herlufsholms hemmeligheter (The Secrets of Herlufsholm), which aired in May.
The documentary revealed that the school, favored by Denmark’s elite, had a culture of “systemic bullying” and detailed allegations of physical violence, harassment and sexual abuse by former students.
One former student stated that it was normal for older students to hit their younger classmates, while another described instances of corporal punishment.
Some of the students reported that the staff had turned a blind eye to the behavior.
In November, four students were expelled from campus after allegedly engaging in abuse and filming various incidents.
The report has since led to the dismissal of Herlufsholm’s headmaster, while the school will carry out an independent investigation into the claims.
Prince Christian, who is not connected to the allegations, joined the school in August 2021 and his sister Princess Elizabeth was due to attend at the end of the year.
