Meanwhile, the Duke of Sussex made an appearance at the virtual awards ceremony, where she spoke about her mother’s impact on the world and the importance of young changemakers.

“There isn’t a day in the last two decades that I haven’t thought about the mark he left, not just on me and my brother, but on all of our lives,” Harry said.

“You have all kept your voice alive by showing the world how every little action counts, how kindness is still valued, and how our world can be better if we choose to make it so.”

Harry closed the ceremony by thanking the winners and making a moving reference to his mother.

“I know that the memory I have of my mother will never fade, because I see her spirit in each of you,” he said. “Thank you for keeping her fire alive.”

The Diana Awards are given to young people between the ages of nine and 25 for their social and humanitarian work.

Established in memory of the Princess of Wales in 1999, this year’s winners They include change makers who designed projects to improve computer literacy in developing countries, created better access to mental health support, provided period products and resources to underserved communities, and spearheaded sustainability-focused community events for youth.

One of the recipients is Chantel Contos herself from Australia, who has been recognized for her work on Teach Us Consent.

A few years ago, she exposed misogynistic attitudes within Australian schools and helped collect over 6,000 testimonials from women and girls. The Diana Awards state that she “used her voice to improve sex education around consent, breaking cultures of silence around sexual harassment, abuse and rape culture.”

Winners are usually invited to attend an award ceremony in their area (although this year it was virtual) and are provided access to a development program which aims to “further increase its already proven capacity for innovation, leadership and social change, through access to resources, opportunities and training, both face-to-face and online”.

Princess Diana was particularly known for her charity work during her lifetime. She was a patron of the arts, the Red Cross, charities in other parts of the world and, most notably, her work with AIDS patients in the 1980s.

He became the first British royal figure to have physical contact with AIDS patients and continued his work in this field despite the queen’s disapproval.
