Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings team reassured cast and crew from a diverse cast and Asian culture to avoid racial stereotypes “at every turn”.
Simo Liu, the Chinese-Canadian star in the superhero movie, was the first Asian to headline a Marvel movie.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who is of Japanese, American, Slovak and Irish descent, the film also stars Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung.
In a zoom interview from Los Angeles, Kevin Feige, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings were created with the authenticity of Asian culture in mind and the global appeal of its message.
“It’s important to avoid racial stereotypes, because none of us are interested. You hire amazing people in the culture we portray in the film: Dave Kallaham (author), Destin Cretten, Simu, Tony and Michelle Yo, all brought nothing but honor and talent to bring this story to life, ”Fez told PTI.
The film updates its comic book sources, with Shang Chi’s father Fu leaving the ice and being reported as a troubled character, and being replaced by Venu, the original character for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kevin Feez says Tony Leung has turned Venu into a well-rounded character beyond a stereotypical villain. Leung is one of the most famous international stars and is best known for his work on film classics such as In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express and 2046.
“At Marvel we’ve been lucky to work with so many famous actors, people you can call Living Legends (but) no one is as impressive as Tony or that word can hit the Legend. He’s never been to a Hollywood set before. I live in Los Angeles, sometimes you see other actors , But Tony is this legendary man only in these wonderful movies.
“It was great to meet him in person, which I did briefly before the shutdown. Venu is a new character. We really want him to have villain tones, but we want you to be this sad guy who feels so deep. For this no one is greater than Tony. We have a lot of expectations on what he can do and he has surpassed them all. It’s a very special show. “
The producer says that Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, in its essence, is a “celebration” of a martial arts superhero on a deeply moving journey.
According to Feez, the film’s storyline pitched to the studio when Cretton first met as a director for the film: Action, Family and Inspiration.
“The deep meaning behind this Marvel hero origin story and journey is that he leaves his father, his family, the movie and goes back home. These are universal stories and myths that we want to take very seriously,” he added.
The film, set against the backdrop of the Avengers: Endgame (2019) events, follows Shang-chini, who is drawn into the secret Ten Rings company and has to face the past he left behind.
The film is set to release in India on September 3.
Kevin Feige says Shang Chi has been on the list of “great characters with great stories” from Marvel Comics for almost 20 years.
“During my first two years at Marvel, I remember digging into the comics and scrutinizing the list – it was created before I started – characters with great potential, could become great movie heroes. Shang Chi has been on that list for over 20 years. After introducing so many characters, ‘Our great Let’s go back to the cast ‘and introduce new characters to the audience. It may not show, ”he said.
Aquafina, Mengir Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Muntenu and Benedict Wang also star in Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings.
