For more than a decade, the Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson appeared in the action avatar, Kicking enemies and flying in her signature red robes. However the Academy Award nominated actor is not just an action hero, she is not just a beauty queen because she was recognized in the early years of the movie business. In her nearly three-decade career, Scarlett has portrayed a wide variety of women on screen, and to her credit, she is better than most of them. One such memorable period drama is Girl with Pearl Earrings. I remember very little because despite such a strong cast and being nominated for multiple Oscars, the film rarely sparked controversy when anyone mentioned the film’s main stars – Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.
2004 Peter Webber’s direction is set in the 17th century and Tracy Chevalier is adapted from the novel of the same name. The feature is very detached from the source material and as a result we lose some links and event details. However, where editing helps it makes the Girl with Pearl earring more concise and pointy. The film, unlike the novel, revolves around the relationship between the esteemed artist Johannes Vermeer (played by Colin Firth) and the farm worker Greet (Scarlett Johansson). It helps to highlight not only their bond, the unspeakable tension between them, but also the obvious class division that their friendship has faced.
The storyline goes like this – Johannes Vermeer hires a worker from his manor to be his assistant and his model. Vermeer’s patron (Tom Wilkinson) focuses on Greet and even tries to break her. To pacify him, Vermeer proposed to him a painting of Greet instead. Vermeer’s mother-in-law lent her daughter pearl earrings to Greece for a portrait, which eventually became one of the masterpieces created by a Dutch painter.
Scarlett Johansson was just 17 years old when she was cast in the role of Greet. But the maturity with which she played such a layered role is visible to everyone today. Not only did her expressions deceive her desire for a better station in life for Gret, but her almost unconditional love for her ‘master’ also shone on her face. Colin Firth has been quiet, subdued like Vermeer, and this has been intentional since the actor discovered in his research that Vermeer is a kind of solitude. Helped in the case of cinema is precisely its delicate cinematography, maintained by the Portuguese cinematographer Eduardo Serra. He skillfully played with light and colors to reflect the similarities with the real world Vermeer paintings.

Webber’s handling of the film and many of its themes must also be acknowledged. Whether the unspoken romance is broken by class, or our heroine may be an injustice faced not only by men, but also by women; Even being a poor young woman was traditionally considered a curse by society to be beautiful. In many ways, Girl with Pearl Earring is a story of an coming age, realizing that the world will constantly punish her for having higher goals than her current station, either in her personal life or professionally.
