In the new series of 9Honey Best Selfie, we present stars with old images from their Instagram feed to see how they react. Expect memories of joy, heartbreak, and insecurities, all told through the lens of time.
Catriona Rowntree began her career as a researcher at Channel Nine’s world of Wonders, going on to become a reporter and in 1994 the host of the show. At the same time, she was a Triple J radio host and host of the children’s show. What’s new old man?
In 1996, Rowntree joined the Get away team as a reporter, and has stuck with the travel series to this day. His workday is something the rest of us can only dream of: getting paid to travel to some of the most spectacular places in the world.
No wonder he’s been on the show for over 26 years; that is a job no one should give up.
Rowntree joined Instagram in 2012 and posted photos from her first ski combo trip with her husband.
Check out Catriona’s full reaction on the first episode of Best Selfie in the video above.
“That was taken by my husband,” she told 9Honey.
“It was the first time we went skiing together, even though we had both skied for years separately. And it was like a first date.”
For much of Rowntree’s career, she managed to keep her personal life mostly private, including her marriage to farmer James Pettit and the birth of her two sons, Andrew and Charles.
“[My husband] he doesn’t even read the newspaper. He doesn’t have any social networks.
As Rowntree’s confidence in posting on Instagram grew, so did her comfort in posting more about her life outside of television. In 2013, he first shared photos from a family vacation at Sea World on the Gold Coast.
“That photo was taken at a time of complete joy in my life,” he said.
“We had this wonderful opportunity to meet the dolphins, something I have done 101 times with Get awaybut in this case I wasn’t sure how people would feel if I showed this.
“There’s definitely a fine line that the media has to walk.”
One of Rowntree’s fondest memories was a Get away trip to Paris that he took with his mother, Heather.
“That photo with my mother is one of the most beautiful moments we have shared,” he said.
Shortly after this photo was taken, Rowntree’s father died of cancer.
Her death, and reflecting on this journey with her mother, made Rowntree realize that she never procrastinated.
“[I realised that I had to] savor every moment. None of us know what’s around the corner,” she said.
“Make the most of every moment and treasure everything.”
Beautiful words to live by.
