The Congress Central Election Commission, headed by Sonia Gandhi, on Saturday approved the names of some candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Although not yet officially announced.
The meeting was also attended by several senior leaders, including Congress general secretary, UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi and Congress state president Ajay Kumar Lallu, sources said. It is learned that the names of nearly 50 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections have been printed in this virtual meeting.
Assembly elections will be held in Uttar Pradesh next year. Congress recently announced that it would field women candidates in 40 per cent of the seats for this election. Priyanka Gandhi is showing her full strength in the election campaign. Priyanka is desperately trying to regain the seat lost by the Congress, which has been out of power in Uttar Pradesh for almost three decades.
Earlier in the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress was able to win only seven of the 403 seats in the state. After that, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won only one seat. It was also in the form of party president Sonia Gandhi who won the Rae Bareilly seat.
