Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Narwane has been appointed Chairman and Chief of Staff Committee (CSC). The post of CSC chairman has fallen vacant following the death of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat. Officials familiar with the matter revealed the matter on Wednesday.

Naravane was given the post as he was the most senior of the three commanders. This further boosted the possibility of making General Narawane officially the next CDS in the country. Before the creation of the CDS post in the country, only the senior of the three Army Chiefs was appointed as the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The CSC met on Tuesday to mourn the death of General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 other Army personnel.

Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar assumed duties on September 30 and November 30, respectively. Prior to serving as Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), most of the three service chiefs served as chairmen of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Group captain Varun Singh, who survived the accident, died at a military hospital in Bangalore on Wednesday. Meanwhile, General Narwane had a telephone conversation with the Commander of the Royal Saudi Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Mutair. The military said it discussed bilateral defense cooperation issues.
