To protect Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan from NCB custody, many top lawyers have so far been involved in the case. Satish Manshinde was the first to defend Salman Khan from the blackbuck poaching case, while Amit Desai was the second to defend Salman in the 2002 hit and run case. However, no matter how hard they tried, Aryan Khan could not get bail. Meanwhile, a new face has joined the team of lawyers to save Aryan. My name is Mukul Rohatgi. Senior Supreme Court lawyers are known for charging between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh for a trial from their clients.

Who is Mukul Rohatgi?

Mukul Rohatgi served as the 14th Attorney General of India from 2014 to 2017. Rohatgi, 66, previously served as Additional Solicitor General (ASG) from 2014 to 2017. Rohatgi’s name has been associated with many high profile cases. The biggest of these was the 2002 Gujarat riots, when he appeared in court as an advocate for the Gujarat government. As an ASG, he also participated in the debate in the Supreme Court as a lawyer in the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) case.

Mukul Rohatgi has been identified as the highest paid lawyer after the Maharashtra government appointed him as special prosecutor in the case of CBI special judge Loya’s death. According to reports, Rohatgi was paid Rs 1.20 crore for the case. In April 2018, the Supreme Court rejected a request to hold a hearing on the death of Judge Loya. Mukul Rohatgi welcomed the court decision.

Is Rohatgi a friend of Arun Jaitley?

Mukul Rohatgi is a friend of former BJP leader and Justice Minister Arun Jaitley in the Modi government. Rohatgi also repeatedly mentioned his friendship with Jaitley and the events that led to his visit to Lodhi Garden as a lawyer. After Jaitley’s death in August 2019, Rohatgi said he and Arun Jaitley’s chambers were side by side in the High Court. He said the chamber was still with him. Rohatgi said he had been in a heated argument with Jaitley several times. The two often used harsh words against each other, but in the end the two became friends.

Rohatgi followed in his father’s footsteps

Mukul Rohatgi’s father Awad Bihari Rohatgi is a judge in the Delhi High Court. He carried on his father’s legacy with a law degree from the Government Law College in Mumbai and started practicing soon after college. He had earlier served under Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal (later the 36th Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court). Later he started his own practice. In 1993, the Delhi High Court granted him the status of Senior Advocate and by 1999 he had been appointed Additional Solicitor General of India (ASG). His wife Vasudha Rohatgi herself is a lawyer. Both also have a son.
