The controversy escalated after Lalu Yadav’s remarks on devotee Charan Das
In fact, on his way from Delhi to Patna on October 24, Lalu Yadav called his devotee Charan Das ‘Bhakchonhar’. The remark was followed by outrage in the coalition. Lalu Yadav has been described by many Congress leaders as anti-Dalit. The Congress demanded that Lalu Yadav withdraw the statement. Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also objected to Lalu Yadav’s remarks. He said that a big leader had damaged the dignity of the country and the Dalit community in Bihar by using such words.

Earlier, at an important meeting of senior party leaders, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday stressed the need to maintain discipline and unity in the party and said there was a lack of clarity and coordination among state-level leaders in the Congress on policy issues.
