Wednesday is a very special day for India and Indonesia. Sukmawati, the youngest daughter of Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, converted to Islam today at a ceremony in the country’s Hindu province of Bali. Dia Muthiara Sukmawati, the third daughter of Sukarno in the Muslim-majority country, was officially consecrated on October 26 at the Sudhi Vadani ceremony at the Sokarno Center in Buleleng district.
Sukmawati’s 70th birthday celebrations were attended by only 50 guests amid tight security. Most of them were family members as very few people were invited to the function due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information about his conversion was provided by CNN Indonesia a few days ago.
The highlight of the ceremony was the conversion of 70-year-old Sukmawati by her brothers Guntur Soukarnoputra and Guru Sokarnoputra and sister Megawati Sokarnoputri. Not only this, his action was also welcomed by his children i.e. Muhammad’s son Parveer Utma, Prince Haryo Poundrajarna Sumotra Jeevanegara and Gusti Roden Ayu’s daughter Sinivati.
Grandmother was a big reason to change religion
According to a CNN Indonesia report, Sukmawati’s grandmother Ida Ayu Naoman Roy Shrimben was largely responsible for Sukmawati’s conversion to Hinduism. Sukmawati’s lawyer said her grandmother had an immense understanding of Hinduism. Along with her grandmother, Sukmawati was fully aware of the principles and traditions of Hinduism.
Blasphemy case against Sukmavati
Sukmawati, 70, is the third daughter of Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president and also the founder of the Indonesian National Party. He was married to Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran chief Arya, but they divorced in 1984. In 2018, Sukmawati was accused of writing a poem insulting Islam. Protestants have also filed a defamation suit against Sukmavati. Sukmavati apologized.
Islam is the largest religion in Indonesia and the majority of the population are Muslims. The island of Bali is home to a large number of Hindus.
