Shershaah writer Sandeep Srivastava has revealed that he believes Captain Vikram Batra is cutting off his thumb to apply sindoor (crimson) to his girlfriend Dimple Cheema’s “cooked” forehead. He added that Dembele confirmed that the exchange did take place.
Directed by Vishnu Varadhan, Shershaah is based on the life of Vikram Batra award-winning Param Vir Chakra. He died during the Kargil War in 1999. In the film, Siddharth Malhotra played the role of Vikram Batra and Kiara Advani played the character of Dimple Shema.
In an interview with Indian Express, Sandeep Srivastava said, “It took me a long time to accept that his love story had unfolded like this. There is someone who is still single, Dimple. So we can’t sacrifice him… I’ve met Dimple two or three times. We realized That there are certain milestones in their love story. So the journey from one milestone to another is where we used a little imagination and cinematic freedom.”
About the Sindoor scene, he said, “The act itself is exaggerated as if it was from the ’70s or ’80s, but Dimple’s reaction to Kina Filmi Panda Milla Hai Mino (My Man Is So Film) “balances it. Dimple is a beautiful aspect of this story.”
Dimple and Vikram have known each other for four years. The two were planning to tie the knot before his death. Speaking to News18, Sandeep said, “When I was doing my research, and interacted with Dimple, she said that Captain Batra and she had known each other for four years, but the time they spent together was only about 40 days.”
Last month, Vikram Patra’s father, Jiridhar Lal Patra, told a leading Hindi-language daily, “Vikram told us about Dimple and their intention to get married. I told him I was with them in their decision. I knew from the start that Dimple is a very respectful girl who understands relationships.”
About Dimple’s decision to remain unmarried, he said, “After the Kargil war, we told her to get married because she had a life ahead of her. Her parents also told her the same. But she told us that she would not marry and live the rest of her life with Vikram’s memories.”
