Producer Ajay Kapoor has acquired the rights to the Hindi remake of the Tamil film 96 starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha.
The 2018 romantic drama follows the story of two high school sweethearts from the 1996 batch, who reunite 22 years after they split up.
The cast and directors for the remake have not yet been announced. Ajay Kapoor said that he decided to adapt in Hindi in ’96 as a heartfelt, light romantic story has the potential to overcome the language barrier.
“This language breaks down barriers beyond the boundaries of language and region, which prompted me to remake the film in Hindi for a national audience,” the producer said in a statement.
“I am actively working on developing the right script for the narration along with the director and the right cast. Once we have finalized everything, I want to make an official statement about the cast and crew,” he said.
96, directed by C Premkumar, was acclaimed for its subtle performances and became a blockbuster after its release.
Ajay Kapoor recently completed the construction of his upcoming John Abraham-led Attack. He also supports the big-budget film Garud, based on the Afghanistan rescue crisis.
